This enormous oil painting depicts the Battle of Bergisel on August 13, 1809, when, under the leadership of national hero Andreas Hofer, the Tirolean farmers fought heroic battles to defend their homelands against the superior forces of the Bavarians and French. Created by Michael Zeno Diemer, the naturalistic historical painting covers more than 1,000 square meters of canvas and the panorama gives an intriguing representation of the city in the early 19th century; a view of old Innsbruck alongside battle scenes.
