The beautiful Rattenfängerbrunnen is a centrepiece of Korneuburg’s main square. The fountain replaces two wells which were located here next to the old town hall, which itself was relocated by mayor Niklas Engelgershauser after the catastrophic fire of 1417. The Viennese sculptor Emanuel Pendl executed the design and construction of the fountain in 1898, which is crowned by a statue of the city rat catcher blowing his flute. The theme of the rat catcher is inspired by the events of 1646 and the end of the siege by the Swedish Army.
