The Piaristenkirche, also known as the Frauenbergkirche, is the oldest church in Krems and is dedicated to St. Stephen. It dates from 1457 to 1502 and reflects the best of the Gothic style of architecture. The spacious interior with its fine star vaulting in the choir frames the Baroque high altar created by Josef Matthias Götz in 1756. Kremser Schmidt was responsible for the beautiful altarpiece and for those in the side chapels. At one time the church was used by Protestants in the Reformation but came into the hands of Jesuits in 1616. It was transferred to Piarist possession on the dissolution of the Jesuit order.
