Schloss Petronell, originally an 11th century moated castle, stands approximately on the site of the forum of the Roman settlement of Carnuntum. The building was remodelled in the 17th century by the Baroque architects Domenico Carlone and Carlo Canevale. The imposing castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Central Europe. Among the many wonderful architectural features is the beautiful square inner court with stairs leading to the main entrance, the magnificently frescoed hall, the Sala Terrena and the golden ancestral room.
