The beautiful Renaissance Schloss Pöchlarn was built in 1576 by the Regensburg Bishop David Kölderer and was the administrative centre of the diocese and Abbey of Regensburg. It replaced a much older, 12th century castle. The building possesses an imposing tower which, strangely, looks somewhat out of place with its arcaded battlements. Notable external features include the elaborate wrought iron window baskets and balcony over the main entrance with wrought iron railing. The north entrance has a large door knocker in the shape of a lion’s head.
