The Altes Rathaus, constructed in the 13th century, is one of Laa’s most important buildings. It stands on the west side of the historic Stadtplatz. The old town hall is a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance elements with a frontage which is essentially 19th century in character. Seeing the level of the ground floor rooms inside the building it is interesting to note that the roads around it once stood as much as two metres lower than at present. Today it functions as a wine market, library and the home of the Museum of the South Moravian Germans.
