Linz’s old town hall was built in 1509 by the master builder Christoph following a disastrous city fire. The building was modified by the addition of a Baroque frontage and extended in the middle of the 17th century but many features of the older building, such as the octagonal tower, survive. After the Anschluss in 1938 Adolf Hitler stayed here after being joyously received into the city. Today the building houses the offices of the mayor and the local council.
