The Baroque cathedral, designed by Pietro Francesco Carlone, was built between 1669 and 1678 for the Jesuits but fell into decline after the dissolution of the order in 1773. It was made the cathedral church in 1783 and served as such until 1909. There are many fine interior features such as the marble high altar by Colomba and Barberini with a painting above it by Antonio Bellucci. The 17th century choir pews are by a monk from Garsten. The Baroque cathedral organ by Franz Xaver Krismann was played by Anton Bruckner who served as the cathedral organist from 1856 to 1868.
