The 70 metre high observatory, or mathematical tower, lies on the eastern edge of the Kremsmünster monastery. Building of the observatory was commenced in 1748 and was completed within ten years. The nine story structure was intended to house a universal museum leading from inanimate nature on the lower floors via a view of the cosmos on the sixth floor to the chapel on the seventh floor. Today the museum reflects those intentions in its range of exhibits especially the astronomical collection. From the sixth floor there is am outstanding view of the whole monastery complex.
