The Nico Dostal Denkmal on Korneuburg’s main square, near the town hall, celebrates the life of one of the city’s most famous sons. Nikolaus Josef Michael Dostal, operetta and film music composer, was born on 27 November 1895, in Korneuburg, and died on 27 October 1981, in Salzburg. Dostal originally studied law at the University of Vienna but gave it up to return to the Academy for Church Music in Klosterneuburg. He came to fame when his Great Mass in D major premiered in Linz in 1913. After the First World War the composer worked at various theatres in Austria and then moved to Berlin and subsequently Salzburg where he worked in the music publishing business and as an arranger. His works include the operetta Clivia and numerous pieces of film music and church music.
