The neo-Gothic new cathedral was begun in 1855 and completed in 1862 at the behest of the Bishop of Linz, F.J. Rudiger. The building was designed by Vincenz Staz, who was also responsible for Cologne cathedral. The cathedral is built on a grand scale and can accommodate a congregation of twenty thousand although the height of the tower was limited by a restriction which prevented it surpassing that of St. Stephen’s in Vienna. The cathedral is notable for its wonderful stained glass including the famous window which depicts the history of Linz.
