The Südmährer Heimatmuseum was founded in 1984 and housed in the old town hall of Laa. The museum was created to keep alive the memory of the experiences of the Sudeten Germans over the centuries. Their history begins in the Middle Ages with the Christianisation, colonisation and urbanisation of Bohemia and Moravia and the eventual imposition of German culture. The conflict between Czechs and Germans began in earnest during the Hussite Wars of the Reformation and continued to ferment over the centuries reaching its climax during and immediately after the Second World War.
