The history of the Benediktinerabtei of Michaelbeuern, founded in 736, goes back to the Carolingian period and the monastery was once one of the wealthiest in Austria. In its long history the abbey has accumulated many treasures, including many fine statues and paintings, which can be viewed during one of the guided tours. The cloister buildings include a 12th century refectory, while the abbot’s hall is decorated with frescos by Franz Nikolaus Streicher. The Stiftskirche dates from the 11th century but its Gothic features were largely obliterated in its Baroque makeover. There is a particularly impressive high altar with sculpture by Meinrad Guggenbichler and paintings by Rottmayr.
