Inzersdorf-Getzersdorf is particularly rich in memorials and chapels and the Lower Austria Bildstockweg is a walk round the area which takes in many of these interesting monuments, many from Baroque times. Each of these is dedicated to a different saint or historical figure. One popular saint is Johannes Nepomuk, who was canonised in 1729 because his stand against the King of Bohemia in respect of secret confession cost him his life. Other dignitaries commemorated are Joachim Tabernitius and Graf Georg Ludwig von Sinzendorf. There are also the inevitable plague columns and war memorials which remind us of Austria’s sometimes turbulent past.
