The Carmelite convent in Mayerling was founded at the behest of Emperor Franz Joseph was a former hunting lodge belonging to Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown. It was here that an infamous incident took place on January 30 1889 when the prince was found dead with his mistress Baroness Mary Vetsera in an apparent act of suicide. What actually happened has never been satisfactorily explained. Today the lodge is a museum and a tourist attraction and visitors can see the location of the couples fateful bed in the convent’s Lady Chapel.
