Mauthausen, opened in 1938, was the cruelest camp in the Nazi concentration camp system and was built as a punishment camp to accommodate criminals and political prisoners, although towards the end of the Second World War Jewish prisoners were also sent here. The Mauthausen prison was built like a fortress to a very high standard of construction, making lavish use of granite from the quarry nearby. Prisoners were used as forced labour, most notoriously in the nearby granite quarries, the Wiener Graben, where they were subjected to an unforgiving regime of hard labour.
