Schloss Mauterndorf, situated on a rocky outcrop to the northwest of the market town of Mauterndorf, was built in the 14th century, and extended in the early 16th century to protect the southern end of the Radstadt Tauern Pass. Today the stronghold houses a fascinating museum devoted to life in the late Middle Ages, part of which, in the 44 metre high keep, shows the everyday life of a mediaeval archbishop, members of his court and household. The castle was once owned by Herman Göring and it was here he was captured at the end of the 2nd World War.
