Schloss Marchegg is first mentioned in the 14th century although it wasn’t until the late 15th century that it had expanded to become a formidable fortress. In later years the castle lost its defensive importance and was transformed from a fortress into a palace. At the time of the imperial monarchy it had become a hunting lodge and for this reason it has housed a hunting museum since 1959. Other parts of the building contain the Marchegg heritage museum and an African museum.
