The Mammuthöhle, stretching for 40 kilometres or more, is the largest of approximately 200 caves in the Dachstein district. Its name derives not from the discovery of mammoth bones but because of its size. The cave passages, formed by the erosion of ancient rivers, reach up to 20 metres high. The dry bed of the River Traun forms a huge tunnel leading to the Mitternachtsdom (Midnight Dome), a 40 metre high chamber, where visitors are treated to a multimedia exhibition about cave exploration.
