The beautiful Hauptplatz, which was laid out in 1260, is an enormous two hundred and nineteen by sixty metre square close to the Danube at the southern end of the Niebelungenbrücke. With an area of approximately 13,000 m² it is Austria’s largest town square. The centre point of the square, which is surrounded by the well preserved houses of rich merchants, is the Trinity Column. After the Anschluss of Germany and Austria, in March 1938, until the end of the Second World War, the Hauptplatz was renamed Adolf-Hitler-Platz
