Schloss Kreuzenstein is first mentioned in the 12th century as being in the possession of Dietrich von Grizanestein but of this castle nothing now remains. In 1645 the invading Swedish army, under Field-Marshal Thorstenson , seized Kreuzenstein. After the invaders were defeated by the forces of the Emperor, the castle was systematically demolished leaving only a pile of uninhabitable rubble. Over two hundred years later, Count Johann Nepomuk Wiczek started the rebuilding and restoration of the castle which he undertook in the then fashionable neo-Gothic style. Today, the imposing building and its charming chapel are open to visitors and it is home to a falconry centre and baroque museum.
