This building first belonged to Gotthard von Starhemberg or was possibly bequeathed to him by Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III who, legend has it, died in this house on August 19th, 1493. In 1507 the building was purchased by Kremsmünster monastery and then redesigned in the Renaissance style by Christoph Canevale between 1578 and 1580. The house was subsequently remodelled by Max Martin Spaz in 1616 and two round rooms with domes were added. The building is now the property of the City of Linz. The last major restoration took place between 1984 and 1985.
