Burg Clam was built in 1149 by Otto von Machland, the most important political figure in Upper Austria of his time. The fortress consisted of two 30 metre towers, which still exist today, and a keep. During the middle ages the ownership of the castle changed many times until 1454 when it passed into the hands of the Counts of Clam. Today the fortress houses a museum which can be seen on a guided tour. Besides the historic architecture there are rare paintings, furniture, Meissen porcelain and Renaissance armour. The highlight of a visit is the dining room with its decorated walls and hand-painted china.
