The famous Austrian poet Josef Weinheber, born 1892, bought a house in 1936 in Kirchstetten where he lived with his wife until his death in 1945. A substantial number of his poetic works were written at the house, in which he found great inspiration, as his letters attest. The alcoholic Weinheber, who was a member of the Nazi party, committed suicide as the Russian army approached Vienna in 1945 and his grave is in the garden of the house. His son, who is the present occupier, has preserved part of the house as it was in the poet’s time and it can be visited by prior arrangement.
