Built in 1553, the Court Church was built by Ferdinand I as a mausoleum for Maximilian I. Inside, the ornate black marble sarcophagus does not actually contain any remains but is still a superb example of German Renaissance sculpture. 24 marble reliefs depict the accomplishments of the Emperor and 28 larger-than-life statues, of real and legendary ancestors, surround the tomb. Andreas Hofer, leader of a rebellion against Napoleon’s forces and national hero, is also buried here. The 16th century Silver Chapel, built in 1578 as the tomb of Archduke Ferdinand II and his wife, is well worth a visit.
