The 740 metre high Eulenberg, also known as the Eigenberg in former times, in which the Hermannshöhle can be found, is north west of Kirchberg. The rocks are predominantly limestone over granite and slate which favours the formation of caves, by dissolution of the rock in acidic water. There are a number of routes through the caves open to visitors, for example the normal route which encompasses some of the most impressive chambers and pools with their characteristic formations of stalagmites and stalactites with fanciful names like ‘The White Waterfall’.
