The Filmgalerie has three main three main areas of activity; to provide a access to the best of Austrian and international cinema, to educate cinema goers and film makers by means of its research, teaching and exhibition programmes and, thirdly, to carry out an ambitious preservation task by digitising the cinematic heritage. The 2,000 square metre film gallery was designed by the architect Dietmar Feichtinger and has a indoor and outdoor cinema, a large exhibition space, a bar, a shop as well as a digital film restauration suite and seminar rooms.
