Laa an der Thaya, like Bruck an der Leitha, was an important Babenberg border town and was provided with strong fortifications in the form of a wall which stretched 2.2 kilometres round the town. In places the wall, which were conceived by Duke Leopold VI and completed in 1220, reached nine metres in height and two metres thick. After the colonisation of Moravia, Laa had no strategic importance and went in to decline. In the Thirty Years War the fortifications proved inadequate because they were not built to withstand cannon fire. In 1850 a large part of the fortifications were dismanted, leaving only the castle, the Reckturm and a fragment between the hospital and parsonage. What remains, though is an impressive reminder of former times.
