Korneuburg’s city walls, originally 1650 metres long, once enclosed the city completely. Today the remaining parts demonstrate how substantial the defences were. Behind the Finanzamt on Laaerstrasse is the largest surviving section and part of the ditch. The first fortifications are known to have been constructed at the beginning of the 14th century. The walls were increased in height to almost eight metres and thickness to two metres in the 15th century using stone from quarries at Höflein. Before the main wall stood a lower wall and before that a ditch which was fed with water from local streams.
