The historic Stadtturm originates from the years 1440 to 1447. It functioned as a watch tower, against enemies and fire for centuries, a role which was formerly taken by the tower of the church of St. Nikolas, dedicated in 1193. The tower was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War when Count Puchheim Korneuburg retook the city for Austria. The outside of the building, which was substantially renovated at the end of the 19th century, has coats of arms of the state and city.
