The Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld takes its name from the biblical text referring to “the lilies of the field” and was founded in 1202 by Leopold VI of Babenberg, who is buried in the fine Romanesque abbey church. The abbey’s architecture is predominantly Romanesque and Gothic, surprisingly without the heavy Baroque influence which dominates other establishments in Austria. The monastery’s cloister has stained glass from the early 14th century and a beautiful well house while in the south wing there is a picture gallery containing etchings by Dürer and Rembrandt. The abbey library has fine stucco work and frescos.
