Lower Austria has a large number of pre-historic sites which take the form of concentric ditches surrounding a large central area. One of the best preserved is to be found in the fields near Kleinwetzdorf. This monument was constructed in the 5th century BC and involved the moving of thousands of cubic metres of earth to form circular ramparts. The precise purpose of the earthworks is unknown, was it the site of a temple, a cemetery or a fortress? Overall, there are three concentric ditches enclosing an area of two square kilometres, which gives some idea of the scale of the edifice.
