Burg Altpernstein was built in the year 1000 in a commanding position 400 metres above the Kremstal to protect the population against plundering Hungarians. It is chronicled in 1160 and 1207. The fortress changed hands many times during its history, not necessarily to the benefit of the local population. In the 16th century the castle was owned by a Protestant family who had contact with Martin Luther. Nowadays the castle, which was renovated from 1946 onwards, is a centre for catholic youth but is open to the public.
