The abbey was founded in the 8th century and was destroyed and rebuilt in the 10th century. The Baroque appearance is due to a flourish of building activity in the 18th and 19th centuries. There are many outstanding architectural delights both inside and out and a treasury, containing the unique 8th century Tassilo Chalice, as well as a picture gallery with paintings by Wolf Huber, Jan Breughel and Kremser Schmidt. The oldest of the paintings in the collection dates from the early 15th century.
