The building of the pilgrimage church of Maria Taferl, situated in a pleasant setting overlooking the Danube, was begun in 1661 to the plans of the Viennese master builder Georg Gerstenbrand and continued under the direction of Jakob Prandtauer. Its most striking features are the gilt pulpit and a monumental high altar enclosing the miraculous icon of the pieta by Josef Götz. The wonderful frescos, dating from 1714 and 1718, are the work of Antonio Beduzzi. In addition there are two altar pieces by the painter Kremser Schmidt.
