The Augustinian Abbey of Klosterneuburg dominates the skyline of the Viennese dormitory town. The monastery has a long history starting with its Romanesque foundation in 1114 by Leopold III of Babenberg who created a residence here on the site of the former Roman garrison, Asturis. The Augustinians were subsequently invited to occupy the site and have remained here ever since. The original Romanesque and Gothic buildings were extended in the 18th century by the architect Donato Felice D’Allio to plans by Fischer von Erlach but the ambitious plans were never fully realized. Nevertheless, the monastery is an architectural gem and should not be missed.
