In 1957, the distinguished English poet Wystan Hugh Auden (born 1907) bought a farmhouse in Kirchstetten as a summer residence, and continued to visit up to his death, in Vienna, in 1973. His house, where he wrote a substantial part of his later works, is now a museum which commemorates his life and literary work. The beautiful old Audenhaus, which is maintained by the municipality, contains a work room and a documentation area. Auden was finally buried in Kirchstetten, where his well maintained grave can be seen in the old cemetery.
