Amphitheatre I is the smaller of the Roman settlement of Carnuntum’s amphitheatres. It was built in the second century AD about five hundred metres from the military camp and served the legionnaires for both entertainment and as a drill ground. The amphitheatre, which had a capacity for about 8000 spectators, has two entrances and has, at its centre, a square basin which presumably provided drainage. To the north of the building there is a vaulted walkway leading towards the Danube.
