The Alchemistenmuseum in Kirchberg is devoted to the history and practise of alchemy. The collection is based on the inventory of items sensationally discovered in a room in Oberstockstall castle’s chapel in 1980. What was found is a late 16th century chemical and metallurgical laboratory which gives a unique picture of the alchemist’s world. Over one thousand objects were excavated, the most extensive inventory of its kind. The objects were evidently all deposited at the same time and were used in the various alchemic processes which contrived to make gold from base metals. The archaeological finds included traces of chemical and raw materials.
