Schloss Wildenstein, which stands on a steep rocky spur, dates approximately from the 11th to 12th centuries and became an imperial stronghold in 1419. The castle burned down twice, the first time in 1593 and secondly in 1715 after which it was abandoned and fell into disrepair. There are many legends associated with the ruins, which is reputed to be connected to Lauffen by an underground passage way. For the energetic, the castle is in walking distance of the centre of Bad Ischl.
