The fortress of Weissenburg dates from about 1250 when Dietrich, Ortolf und Georg, sons of Heinrich von Rabenstein, erected a castle on the Weißen Felsen. The building is in an outstanding location on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Pielach valley. Since 1975 the ruins have been in private hands and this has offered a measure of protection for the castle against further ravages of time. Although the building isn’t open to the public, it is well worth the walk up from Frankenfels via Höhenberg nach Gillus for the amazing scenery and views of the castle. There are also good views to be had from the Mariazellerbahn railway which runs close by.
