The Wasserturm, also known as the Götzenturm, served as a power base for the von Röthelstein clan in the city of Hainburg from which they could exercise control over their considerable possessions, fishing grounds and trade on the Danube. The von Röthelsteins also owned a substantial 12th century fortress two kilometres downstream of Hainburg. The octagonal Götzenturm dates from around the middle of the 13th century and forms the north east corner of Hainburg’s city walls. The tower’s design suggests that it also functioned as a dwelling.
