Grossmugl is named after Central Europe’s largest hill tumulus, the Iron Age Leeberg, which rises from the fields near on the outskirts of the village. The grave is sixteen metres in height and probably dates for the Hallstadt period, eight to five hundred years BC. There has never been a proper scientific excavation and so the origins and even the purpose of the structure are unclear. A nearby smaller tumulus, the Grab der Königin, was excavated between 1950 and 1956 but the findings were inconclusive. Like so many similar archaeological sites in the region, the tumulus is claimed to contain the remains of Attila the Hun.
