The extraordinary, extravangantly designed Baroque Dreifaltigkeitssäule was constructed between 1714 and 1718 for the citizens of Baden to commemorate their deliverance from the plague. The column was designed by the painter Altomonte and the Italian sculptor Giovanni Stanetti. It was built at the centre of the city on the site of the former stocks. During construction of the foundations, the builders found the remains of a Roman wall, possibly part of an ancient aqueduct. The Ferdinandsbrunnen at the front of the column, added in 1833, commemorates a failed assassination attempt on Crown Prince Ferdinand.
