The Schloss Traunsee, also known as the Villa Maria Theresia, was built between 1872 and 1875 by Herzog Philipp von Württemberg for his wife Maria Theresia. The family used the castle, set in a beautiful lakeside, location as a summer residence until Philipp’s death in 1907. Eventually the building passed into the hands of his sons and then, in 1935, it was leased to the Linz regional tourism organisation. In 1946 it became a school but required extensive renovation because of the effects of neglect during the war years. The renovations, improvements and additions continued until the 1990’s.
