Gmünd’s Stadtmuseum is housed in the city’s most remarkable historic building, the old city hall which is characterised by its two wooden bulb towers which were restored in 1988. The museum charts the history of Gmünd, which is the economical and cultural centre of the northern Waldviertel, from the earliest times to the present. There is a substantial section devoted to the ancients city guilds; weaving, lead working, bricklaying, baking, iron working, milling and many others. An exhibition of weaponry shows how rifles were made and also contains the sword of the last executioner, since Gmünd had an important regional court which was empowered to issue death sentences.
