Gars’ elegantly proportioned Renaissance Rathaus was built in 1593 by the mayor, Matthäus Teufel. Over the entrance, which has a characteristic first floor balcony, there is the city’s coat of arms. The onion domed tower once housed Gars’ market bell. Outside the building there is the Gothic grain measuring stone, with a volume of 75.4 litres, which is mentioned as early as 1344. The city pillory once stood in front of the town hall but was removed in the 19th century.
