The former fortress of Schloss Thürnthal dates from at least the 13th century. In common with many of Austria’s castles, it has been remodelled many times, firstly in the 16th century as a Renaissance building and secondly, following a fire in 1679, as a Baroque palace. The latter rebuild was done under the supervision of the great architect Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. During the Second World War the castle served as Lower Austria’s repository for art treasures and housed parts of the collections of the Rothschild family, for example. Since 1998 the castle has been in the process of restoration and, for the first time for many years, is publicly accessible. It is surrounded by eight square kilometres of beautiful parkland.
