The Löwe von Aspern is a monument made of sandstone which commemores the Battle of Aspern-Essling during the Napoleonic Wars. The memorial, which shows a dying lion under whose left shoulder blade the tip of the sword which has pierced him can be seen, was sculpted by Anton Dominik Fernkorn and erected in 1858. The lion symbolizes the many dead among Austrian soldiers and civilians who contributed to austria’s victory in the battle, which almost brought about Napoleon’s total defeat. The inscription on the monument reads: “To the memory of the Austrian warriors who honourably died in battle on May 21 and 22, 1809”.
