The Tauernstrassenmuseum documents the history of transport in the region over 2000 years, from the earliest times to the present. The Romans were the first to construct roads over the alps although people had travelled over the mountains since ancient times. The museum’s exhibits show different facets of transport history; trade and transport in the Middle Ages, the road and its place in history during the farmers’ wars and the persecution of Protestants, post over the passes and the building of the Tauern motorway. There is a section devoted to guest houses and inns of the Middle Ages and displays of agricultural utility vehicles.
